Farming

Israel has transformed some of the world's most arid land into highly productive farmland through innovation, science, and determination.

Farming the desert

In the Negev and Arava deserts, farmers grow vegetables, fruit, dates and flowers for local markets and export.

Modern drip irrigation — pioneered by Israeli engineer Simcha Blass and commercialized in the 1960s — delivers water drop by drop directly to plant roots, dramatically reducing waste. Today it is used by farmers around the world.

Greenhouse technology, drought-resistant crop varieties, and close cooperation between farmers and research institutes have made Israeli agriculture a model for growing more with less.
